WordCamp Video Highlight 2017/12/15

WordCamp US is two weeks past and the videos are rolling into WordPress TV.

Apparently one of the presentations that created a lot of buzz was Morten Rand-Hendriksen and his talk on the Gutenberg Editor.

In the short time that I have been involved in WordPress, I have been impressed with the people that are involved in setting up KidCamps. One of my favorite people is Sandy Edwards She gave the following presentation.

This session is all about kids and code. We will discuss why you should teach your kids to code. We will cover how to teach your kids to code. We will even talk about how to keep your young bloggers safe online.

 

WordCamp Video Highlight 2017/11/17

With the release of WordPress 4.9, which includes the Gutenberg Editor and all of the buzz leading up to it, I thought I would feature 2 videos that highlight the editor.

At WordCamp Sofia, Mauricio Gelves gave this presentation titled “The Gutenberg Project: pros and cons for this big change in WordPress.”

Gutenberg is the name of the new content editor you will be using in the version 5.0 of WordPress. After a lot of years using TinyMCE, WordPress will introduce a new editor in its administrator interface that will allow us to create and edit content in a more efficient and simple way. Join Mauricio Gelves in his talk to see the different pros and cons of this big change in the WordPress history.

And from WordCamp Dublin, Tammie Lister gave this presentation “Getting to know Gutenberg”

WordCamp Video Highlight 2017/09/22

Noobs. Rookies. Beginners.

We’ve all been there at one time or another. Where to start, what theme do I use, which plugins to get started, etc., etc., etc.

Here are two videos for beginners that deal with security and plugins.

WordCamp Video Highlight 2017/09/08

For the past several weeks I have been keeping my eye out for a WordCamp video that was about the Gutenberg Editor Plugin. All of my searches have returned this result…

I found several videos on YouTube but that wasn’t going to do me any good. This blog is about WordCamp videos submitted to WordPress TV.

So, my beady little mind started to churn and I decided to create my own video. I reached out to Tammie Lister, who is one of the leads for the Gutenberg project. My first thought was that Tammie could recommend someone that I could contact. I was pleasantly surprised when Tammie stated that she could show me some of the features of the plugin. So, after a little planning and a short discussion before we started the video, here are the results.

 

WordCamp Video Highlight 2017/09/01

Before I get to the videos this week, I would like to ask the WordPress Community for video submissions that would feature the Gutenberg Editor Plugin. I have been searching for a video related to this subject but none have been posted to WordPress TV. There are several on YouTube but I would much rather feature content from WPTV, because….well, you know.

The videos highlighted today come from WordCamp Kochi 2017 which was held in February. Before I get to the videos, let me say that the organizers came up with a really cool Wapuu! It was a couple named Ammu & Appu.

Pretty neat, eh?

WordPress Community Interview With Ivica Delic

Ivica Delic is 45 years old, lives in Croatia and loves technology, especially WordPress.

Ivica was searching for WordPress groups on Facebook and decided that he wanted to create a comprehensive list of these groups. This was a way he could ‘give back’ to the WordPress Community. During his research, he became more and more active, eventually becoming an assistant administrator to several groups. He has also created groups such as WordPress Speed Up and Quality WordPress Groups. The later is a place for people to go, not to ask questions, but to find a group that could answer a specific question. You can a list of over 80 WordPress Groups on Facebook HERE.

He also created a closed group for Administrators only. Here, they discuss ways to combat spam, trolls and other issues that plague groups on Facebook.

Ivica also started a website, Free Lancers Tools which is a resource of various quality tools (some free, others paid) that freelancers may have a need for. There are 6 categories and 15 sub categories.

WordPress Community Interview With Tracy Apps

Tracy Apps is a creative problem solver with over 15 years of client experience in all types of projects. She got her start blogging on B2 and followed that transformation to WordPress. She is active in several local Meetups in the Milwaukee area.

Tracy is the co-owner of Corner Market Media, which offers a variety of services including design, custom development, branding and training.

She has spoken at several WordCamps about various aspects of design. Some of her presentations can be seen HERE on WordPress.tv.

Tracy and Shelby Elliott are in the process of launching a podcast titled The Not So Straight and Narrow, which will be available on various podcast platforms soon.

“This wouldn’t be a bad job if I didn’t have to deal with CLIENTS!”

Although my work with WordPress is limited to my work and personal websites, I do hear people talking about client work at WordCamps. Terms that are tossed around like “make it pop”, “feel free to be creative”, “I’ll fax you some ideas that I have” and many other statements can give designers and developers nightmares.

I picked two videos that talk about working with clients and steps that can be taken to ease the pain.

Nathan Ingram: Dealing With Problem Clients

Spend time talking with a group of freelancers and the conversation will inevitably include someone’s unfortunate experience with a terrible client. Most freelancers have a story or two (or eight). While bad clients can’t be completely avoided, there are strategic steps any freelancer can take to contain the impact of a bad client. In this session, Nathan will explain the how to create a system that preserves workflow and keeps problem clients in check.
